In the context of the implementation of the Action Plan for Gender Equality 2023-2026 and the signing of the Gender Equality Policy Statement of the Ministry of Education, The Pedagogical Institute (PI) of Cyprus organized on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the premises of the Institute in Nicosia, a Workshop on: "Women in History and its Teaching". The Workshop aimed to contribute to the promotion of gender equality, but also to offer teachers the opportunity to discuss and reflect on the place of women in History and its teaching. The workshop presented concrete suggestions and practices for integrating elements from women's history into the educational process.

The Workshop was welcomed by the Director of the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute, Dr. Elena Hadjikakou, who also read the address of the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr. Athena Michaelidou, and the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms. Josie Christodoulou. Dr Miranda Christou, Associate Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cyprus, Dr Georgia Spanou, educator, researcher and author, and Dr Lucas Pericleous, Curriculum Officer of the Pedagogical Institute, successfully delivered the keynote speeches. Ms Christou examined the absence of women from recent Cypriot history from a feminist perspective, focusing mainly on how 1974 re-drew gendered discursive fields and limited women's political agency. Ms Spanou discussed how the book "Cypriot Women Who Inspire" could be an opportunity to start the discussion regarding the pioneering role of great Cypriot women in claiming the share of visibility they deserved in the public life of the country. Finally, Pericleous focused on how traditional notions of women's status, and of what is historically significant, affect the way women are presented in school history, as well as the contribution of the teaching of women's history in education. This was followed by an interesting discussion between the keynote speakers and the audience, moderated by Ms. Sophia Vlami, Officer of the Pedagogical Institute.

Afterwards, the participants had the opportunity to attend one of the three parallel experiential workshops offered by the actress, playwright and producer Ms Nedi Antoniadis, the actress Ms Athina Kasiou, the teacher Ms Andri Theodoulou, the teacher Ms Georgia Solomou and the Curriculum Officer of the PI Mr. The workshops focused on various strategies, techniques and tools that teachers can use to incorporate aspects of Women's History in their classrooms. More specifically, the workshops gave participants the opportunity to learn about and engage experientially with the mental empowerment activities of the book "Cypriot Women who inspire", the methodology followed in the creation of the play "Women return" through the processing of recorded interviews and archival material, and practical approaches to the study of women's claim to the right to vote in the teaching of history.
