[PIO] Workshop on: "Together for a Better Internet", in the context of the International Safer Internet Day 2024

Today, Tuesday, 6 February 2024, International Safer Internet Day, the Workshop on: "Together for a Better Internet". The Workshop was organized by the Pedagogical Institute of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, with the support of the partners of the Cyprus Internet Safety Centre - CyberSafety and the National Strategy for a Better Internet for Children in Cyprus. The Workshop was attended by students from Primary, Secondary General and Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training and teachers from all over Cyprus.

Aiming to strengthen efforts for creative and safe use of the Internet, the Workshop contributed to raising awareness and providing information on the proper use of the Internet, thus empowering teachers and students to become critical citizens in the digital society and to develop positive attitudes towards the use of the Internet.

In her brief welcome address, the Deputy Director of the Pedagogical Institute, Dr. Elena Hadjikakou, stressed the importance of empowering teachers, children and parents in the safe use of the Internet and the development of digital competences, a task that is carried out through the Pedagogical Institute. In her address, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr Athena Michaelidou, stated that digital education and the modernization of our educational system, through the integration of new technologies in teaching and learning, and the development of digital skills of teachers and students, are a key objective of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth and the Governance Programme.

This was followed by interesting presentations, discussions and an interactive workshop on safe and responsible use of the Internet. More specifically, Christina Papasolomontos, Coordinator of the Cyprus Safer Internet Centre, presented the activities of the Centre. The conference continued with the keynote speech by Mrs. Dimitra Milionis, Associate Professor and Mr. Theodoros Kouros, Lecturer at the Cyprus University of Technology on the topic: "Hey, Alexa, what am I?".

Afterwards, the participants had the opportunity to attend a round table discussion. In the discussion, Professor at Neapolis University Mr. Savvas Hadjichristofis, Associate Professor at Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) Ms. Dimitra Milioni, Lecturer at CUT Mr. Theodoros Kouros and Officer at the Office of the Commissioner for the Protection of Children's Rights Ms. Tonia Siambtani made statements and answered questions submitted by children-members of the Youth Group - CYberSafety Youth Panel.
