[PIO] Workshop "1974: Aspects of then, implications for today"

The Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies of the University of Cyprus and the Turkish Affairs Division of the Press and Information Office (PIO) co-organized today, Saturday, May 11, 2024, their second annual conference on "1974: Aspects of then, implications of today", at the "Theophilos Georgiades" Hall of the Press and Information Office.

The conference was held in Greek and Turkish with the participation of Turkish Cypriot journalists and academics. Mr. Yiannis Antoniou, Deputy Government Spokesman, Mrs. Aliki Stylianou, Director of the GMP, Mr. Haris Stavridis, Chairman of the Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies of the University of Cyprus and Mr. Michael Michael Michael, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of Cyprus.

In his address, the Deputy Government Spokesman Mr. Yiannis Antoniou conveyed the unwavering commitment of the President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides to the search for a solution to the Cyprus problem through meaningful dialogue under the auspices of the United Nations. As he said: "The Greek Cypriot side supports the efforts of the UN Secretary General's envoy to find common ground for the resumption of direct negotiations. It is our conviction that the resolution of the political problem, in a member state of the European Union, will work to the benefit of all affected parties through the creation of a situation of mutual benefit."

In her own welcome address, the Director of the CTI, Ms. Aliki Stylianou, stated that "developments in Turkey and within the Turkish Cypriot community, during the fifty years since the coup and the invasion in Black July 1974, have always been and continue to be one of the most important areas of concern for the CTI and the Turkish Affairs Branch, which, in cooperation with the Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies of the University of Cyprus, as well as with the contribution of distinguished guests, has, over the last two years, attempted a more scientific and in-depth analysis of events in Turkey and within the Turkish Cypriot community".

"Today's conference is a realization of our promise to continue the cooperation between the Turkish Affairs Branch of the CTI and the Department of Turkish and Middle Eastern Studies of the University of Cyprus. On the part of the CTI, we reiterate that there will be a continuation with issues that fall within the sphere of the Branch and are of interest to our society in general", Ms. Stylianou noted.
