Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos today paid a working visit to Slovenia, following an invitation by the Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Slovenia, Ms Tanja Fajon.

During the visit, Mr Kombos had a private meeting with his Slovenian counterpart, followed by extended consultations with the participation of delegations from both Ministries. During the talks, bilateral relations and ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries, cooperation between the two countries at MED9 level, issues related to the European agenda including enlargement and the situation in the Western Balkans, as well as preparations for Cyprus' assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026 were discussed.

The Foreign Minister also briefed Ms. Fajon on the current developments in the Cyprus problem, conveying the government's readiness to resume talks aimed at reaching a viable solution on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, as envisaged by the relevant UN Security Council resolutions. At the same time, he thanked Ms Fajon for Slovenia's long-standing principled stance on the Cyprus issue and expressed confidence that Cyprus and Slovenia will cooperate closely in the framework of Slovenia's status as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the current period.

There was also an exchange of views on the ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East. On the Middle East, the two officials, after condemning Hamas' terrorist attacks against Israel, focused on the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza and the need to protect all civilians. In this context, Mr. Kombos briefed his counterpart on the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to establish a maritime humanitarian aid corridor for the civilian population in Gaza.

Following the consultations, Mr. Kombos and Ms. Fajon made statements to the media.

In the afternoon, Mr. Kombos was received by the President of the country, Mrs. Nataša Pirc Musar, and the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mrs. Urška Klakočar Zupančič. The meetings confirmed the excellent level of bilateral relations and expressed the will of both sides to further strengthen cooperation at bilateral and multilateral level.
