The Parliamentary Defence Committee under its chairman Mr. George Karoullas, Valentinos Fakontis, Pavlos Mylonas and Alekos Tryfonidis paid a visit to Athens between 25-26 March 2024 and had separate meetings with the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Mr. Mr. Yannis Kefalogiannis, the Vice-Chairman and Members of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament and the President of the Hellenic Parliament Mr. Konstantinos Tasoulas. The Committee also attended the official doxology and the military parade for the national anniversary of March 25, 1821.
On the day of the national anniversary of March 25, 1821, the Committee attended the official doxology held at the Metropolis of Athens and then the magnificent military parade of sections of the Armed Forces and Security Corps, in the presence of the A.E. On 26 March, the Committee had a meeting with the Deputy Minister of National Defence, Mr. Yannis Kefalogiannis, in the presence of the Chief of the General Staff of the National Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Dimitrios Houpis, during which a presentation on defence policy issues was held.

Furthermore, current geopolitical developments and Turkey's provocative stance in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean were discussed and the need to use parliamentary diplomacy, bilateral and multilateral cooperation and the joint participation of Cyprus and Greece in all military operations of the European Union and the United Nations to strengthen our common defence policy in order to achieve security, peace and stability in the region. The Deputy Minister of National Defence assured the committee that the priority of the Greek government remains the achievement of a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem and the Chief of the General Staff stated that the unified defence doctrine is in fact Greece's top defence process.
Subsequently, the Committee had a meeting with the Vice-Chairman and Members of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament, during which there was an exchange of views on issues concerning, inter alia, current developments in the Middle East, energy policy, as well as on issues relating to the need to maintain a common strategic policy based on the principles of international law, the upgrading of defence cooperation and the enhancement of the strength of the armed forces of Cyprus and Greece.
Finally, the committee held a meeting with the President of the Hellenic Parliament Mr. Constantinos Tasoulas, during which the challenges faced by Cyprus and Greece on defence and security issues were discussed and views were exchanged on the development of synergy between the two Parliaments.
At noon on the same day, the committee attended a working lunch with the Vice President and Members of the Standing Committee on National Defence and Foreign Affairs of the Hellenic Parliament, during which it was commonly agreed that it is necessary to upgrade the relations between the two parliamentary committees with contacts at regular intervals in order to define strategies to address common challenges.
