The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Mrs Athina Michaelidou, visited today the Agios Lazarou Primary School in Larnaca on the occasion of the start of the school year in primary education.

After the end of her visit, Mrs. Michaelidou in her statements to journalists said: "Today is the first day that we welcome the primary school children to their school. I came here to see the children, at recess, in their classroom, to talk with them and their teachers, with the school management.

The aim is simply to wish the children a good and creative school year, in which they will be able to work with their teachers, so that they can develop those abilities and skills that we are all talking about and so that this year we can take a step towards a modern school.

I'm glad to see a school with the infrastructure at the level it should be, to see the staff caring, being close to the children. I see the management of the school taking care of the school, having their planning and we as a ministry will stand by them so that our children can have a better education."

Afterwards, Michailidou answered questions from reporters.

Asked if any problems arose on the first day in the primary and kindergartens, Michailidou said, "I must say that the problems are minimal and we are already on the way to solve them. We have not had any major problems, because my colleagues had done very good preparatory work. They have ensured that the programmes are ready for implementation, the books are in the schools and the infrastructure is in a controlled state. I also get the message often that having construction sites in schools, having projects in schools is not a negative thing, on the contrary, it means that we constantly care to have better infrastructure in schools."

Asked about the long-standing problem with the Transnational Technical School, the Education Minister noted: "Decisions have already been taken, we are building a new Technical School, which will solve several problems. At the same time, there is a proposal in our plans to build a new high school in Larnaca, which will relieve the situation considerably. There and where we see that there is a problem of overcrowding in Larnaca schools, mainly in secondary education, but also in primary education, we are working intensively with the directorates in order to support these schools in various ways, by changing the districts with many but pedagogical means, so that the lesson can be done better".

In response to a question regarding where the new Technical School is being built and where the new High School will be built, Michailidou said that the new Technical School is near the Rizoelia roundabout. Finally, for the new high school, she noted that she does not yet have the data and that when she will have the complete data she will inform.
