The Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms. Josie Christodoulou, will be in Jordan for contacts from 19 to 20 February. The visit is part of the further strengthening of bilateral relations between the Republic of Cyprus and Jordan in individual areas of cooperation.
Ms Christodoulou's visit will provide an opportunity to review the cooperation between the two countries in the field of gender equality and to study ways to deepen it further.
The Gender Equality Commissioner will have meetings, inter alia, with the Secretary General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW) Ms. Maha Ali, the Head for the Protection of Victims of Domestic Violence, the Jordanian Federation's Head for the Integration of Women Survivors of Violence into Society, and will have contacts with women working in shelters for women victims of violence.
She will also be briefed by the Jordanian Armed Forces in relation to the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 "Women, Peace and Security" and the promotion of women in peacekeeping missions.
During her visit, Ms Christodoulou will visit a school and have a meeting with the school administration and students on cyber security and bullying issues, a project funded by the Republic of Cyprus.
As part of the development cooperation between the two countries, Cyprus has been funding a number of projects in the field of women's empowerment and combating gender-based violence for the last 4 years. The programmes are implemented by the Jordanian National Commission for Women (JNCW).
In addition, the Republic of Cyprus contributes annually, starting from 2021, to the "United Nations Commission for Women" (UN Women) for the implementation of the "Jordan National Action Plan for Women, Peace and Security 2022 - 2025", for the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325.
