The Statistical Office announces the release of the report "Motor Vehicle Registrations", covering the period January-June 2024.
In June 2024, total motor vehicle registrations reached 4,369, an increase of 6.7% compared to 4,094 in June 2023. Saloon passenger car registrations increased 8.9% to 3,447 from 3,166 in June 2023.
The main developments in vehicle registrations during the January-June 2024 period, compared to the same period in 2023, are summarized below:
(a) The total number of registered vehicles increased by 19.2% in the January-June 2024 period to 26,250, compared to 22,021 in the same period in 2023.
(b) Saloon passenger car registrations increased by 17.2% to 20,623, compared to 17,600 in the same period in 2023. Of the total passenger car saloon registrations, 8,791 or 42.6% were new and 11,832 or 57.4% were used cars. Rental cars in particular declined 27.4% to 2,296.
(c) The share of gasoline-powered saloon cars in this category of vehicles decreased in the January-June 2024 period to 49.5% (from 59.9% in the same period in 2023), as did the share of diesel-powered cars (from 10.5% in 2023 to 10.0% in 2024). In contrast, the share of electric vehicles (from 2.2% in 2023 to 3.3% in 2024) and hybrids (from 27.3% to 37.2%) increased.
(d) Bus registrations decreased to 87 in January-June 2024 from 189 in the same period in 2023.
(e) Freight vehicle registrations increased to 2,975 in the January-June 2024 period compared to 2,113 in the same period in 2023, an increase of 40.8%. Specifically, light trucks increased 43.5% to 2,369, heavy trucks increased 31.2% to 341, road tractors (trailers) increased 88.5% to 115, and rental vehicles increased 6.4% to 150.
[F] Motorcycle registrations < 50ke increased to 399 in January-June 2024 compared to 112 in the same period in 2023.
[G] Motorcycle registrations > 50ke increased 3.0% to 1,800 in January-June 2024 compared to 1,747 in the same period in 2023.

Methodological Information[/B]
Purpose and Coverage
Data on Motor Vehicle Registrations are collected on a monthly basis. They relate to new motor vehicle registrations as recorded by the Department of Road Transport.
Registrations are presented by category, make, energy type, new or used, engine capacity, country of manufacture and origin, and other vehicle characteristics, based on information maintained by the Motor Vehicle Registration Service at the Department of Road Transport.
Data Collection
Data are collected by the Statistical Service, which receives the necessary data from the Department of Road Transport.
Definitions
"Motor vehicle" means any vehicle with an engine, which is its sole means of propulsion, intended for road use and used primarily for the transportation of persons or goods, namely:
- Saloon-type passenger cars, which include private cars, taxis, rental cars, training vehicles and vehicles for the disabled.
- Buses, private and public.
- Cargo vehicles, which include heavy and light cargo vehicles, rental vehicles and road tractors (trailers).
- Mopeds or motorcycles, which include mopeds, tricycles, motorcycles and rental motorcycles.
- Tractors, agricultural and non-agricultural.
- Other vehicles, which include road rollers, motorised cranes, heavy vehicles and other vehicles of a special type and use.
Monthly Publication
The report "Motor Vehicle Registrations" has been published on a monthly basis since 1982 and is available free of charge in electronic form on the Statistical Office's web portal.
