The two-day visit of the Gender Equality Commissioner, Ms.Josis Christodoulou, to Jordan, a country with which the Republic of Cyprus has developed cooperation in the field of gender equality, has been completed.
The Commissioner had contacts with the Secretary General of the Jordanian National Commission for Women Ms. Maha Ali, with whom she discussed in depth the challenges faced by women in both countries and the measures taken by the governments of Cyprus and Jordan to combat discrimination and empower women.
During the visit, she also had contacts with representatives of civil society working on issues related to the promotion of gender equality and the fight against violence against women.
Given the participation of the Republic of Cyprus in the UN Women donor group for the implementation of the Jordanian National Action Plan in the framework of the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 "Women, Peace and Security", the Commissioner had the opportunity to discuss and exchange views with women representatives of the Jordanian Armed Forces and Security Authorities, including women who have previously participated in UNFICYP and other peacekeeping missions.
The Commissioner was also received by Ms. Wafa Bani Moustafa, Minister of Social Development and Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the Empowerment of Women, from whom she was briefed on the measures taken by Jordan to enhance women's participation in political life.
Finally, she visited a secondary school, which is participating in the project implemented with funding from the Republic of Cyprus within the framework of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' development cooperation policy, on awareness-raising and information on cybercrime and cyberbullying, including domestic violence. Presentations were made on the project and its results, including the publication of a prevention guide with target groups of teachers, parents, pupils and students. The schoolgirls presented a short theatrical performance on preventing, protecting and combating cyber violence and cyber crime.
The Commissioner was accompanied during her contacts by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Jordan, Mr. Michael Ioannou.
