The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Yiannis Karousos, announced today the announcement of the tender for the construction of the Astromeritis-Eurichos interurban motorway. The announcement of the tender was made in Galata in the presence of the Commissioner for the Development of Mountainous Areas Mr. Kostas Hambiaouris and the community leaders of the villages of the Solea Complex, where the Minister presented the various stages concerning the implementation of the project.
The project is located in the Nicosia District and concerns the construction of a four-lane long-distance motorway with a length of approximately 11 km. The motorway starts at a point on the existing Astromeritis - Evrychou road south of Astromeritis municipality after the junction to the municipality of Vyzakia and ends at the junction of the existing Astromeritis - Evrychou road with the road to Kykkos in the area of Acha. The estimated cost of the project is €89.250.000 million incl. THE ESTIMATED COST OF THE PROJECT IS ESTIMATED AT €8.250 MILLION INCLUDING VAT. The bidding period starts on 15 December 2021 and will be completed on 11 March 2022.
The project is of First Order and includes an on-grade interchange in the area of Koutrafa, as well as two above-ground and two underground vehicle crossings to connect both areas and the existing road. It also includes a large valley bridge of approximately 700 m on the River Olive (Vizakia). A level crossing is foreseen at the beginning of the project, which will be replaced by an unlevel crossing in the future, as part of the construction of the Deneia - Astromeritis section. At the end of the project a final level roundabout is foreseen at the junction to Kalopanagiotis - Kykkos.
The project includes earthworks, storm water drainage, civil engineering works (valley bridge, upper and lower crossings, retaining walls, etc.), utility networks, road construction, road marking and signalling, safety barriers, etc. BB-9]
It is noted that the existing Astromeritis-Eurichos road will remain in operation after the construction of the new motorway. During the discussion he had with the community leaders of the villages of the Solea Complex, Mr. Minister mentioned that for the Anastasiades Government, this project is considered of the highest priority and for this reason it has been included in the National Strategic Plan of Mountain Communities and its implementation has been approved by the Council of Ministers as a project of significant public interest. "The project is another announcement by the President of the Republic and is considered by the Government to be of the highest priority. It is a project that local communities have been waiting for decades and is practical proof of the Government's will to support the inhabitants of mountainous areas", said Mr. Karousos, stressing that "the construction of this long-distance highway will solve various problems related to road safety and, at the same time, will revitalize and further develop the villages of the region". In addition, Mr. Karousos pointed out that, in addition to the residents of the villages of Solea, the citizens of the island, who travel from Nicosia to the wider Troodos area, will also be served. Finally, the Community Leaders of the Solea Complex expressed their satisfaction that after decades of waiting, the interurban motorway has been put on track for implementation, and thanked Mr. Karousos for his practical and steadfast commitment to the completion of this long-awaited project. At the same time, the community leaders of the area expressed their conviction that by facilitating access to and from Nicosia, the rate of urbanization will be reduced and the quality of life of the residents of the wider Troodos area will be improved.
