The Speaker of the House of Representatives today received the new Ambassador of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan to Cyprus, Mr. Basheer F. Zoubi, on the occasion of his assumption of office.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives welcomed Mr. Zoubi to the House of Representatives and wished him every success in his new duties.

During the meeting, the excellent level of the constantly developing relations between the two countries and the prospects for further strengthening the already close cooperation between them in areas of common interest, with special reference to the parliamentary level, were underlined. In this context, Demetriou noted the valuable assistance of the Royal Jordanian Air Force in extinguishing the fires that hit Cyprus last summer.

The President of the Parliament expressed her sincere appreciation for Jordan's firm principled stance on the Cyprus problem. Referring to the current developments pending the arrival of the UN Secretary General's Envoy to Cyprus, Mrs Demetriou stressed our side's commitment to the objective of resuming the negotiations from the point where they were suspended in Crans-Montana, within the framework of the United Nations, in order to reach a solution on the basis of the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. Demetriou expressed concern about the intensifying provocations by the Turkish occupying forces within the buffer zone, with a view to creating new de facto situations. The Turkish claim for a "two-state" solution will never be accepted, as it would be tantamount to legitimizing the Turkish invasion and occupation, she stressed.

The Jordanian Ambassador reaffirmed his country's principled position on the Cyprus problem and efforts to resolve it, in line with the relevant UN resolutions, noting as a positive development the appointment and imminent arrival of the Secretary-General's Envoy to Cyprus. Mr. Zoubi expressed gratitude for Cyprus' support as an EU Member State to Jordan. He assured that his country will always be willing to assist Cyprus in extinguishing fires, whenever requested, on the basis of the Memorandum of Cooperation signed by the two states last summer.

An exchange of views on key current issues followed, with particular emphasis on the volatile situation in the Middle East and the refugee - migration issue, which is of great concern to both states.

Finally, the next steps in the framework of inter-parliamentary cooperation between Cyprus and Jordan were discussed.
