The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Anita Demetriou received today the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, responsible for Hellenes Abroad, Mr. George Kotsiras, who is in Cyprus on the occasion of the World Congress of Cypriots in Diaspora. Mr. Kotsiras was accompanied by the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Mr. Ioannis Papameletiou, the Director of his Diplomatic Office Mr. Dimitrios Yolasis and the Director of his Special Office Mr. Athanasios Panayiotou.
The Speaker of the Parliament congratulated the Greek Deputy Minister on assuming his new duties and wished him every success in his multifaceted work. Mrs Demetriou expressed sadness for the ongoing ordeal that Greece is experiencing and especially for the loss of human lives as a result of the fires raging in many areas of the country and Cyprus' full support in the efforts to deal with them.
During the meeting, the important role of Greek and Cypriot expatriates as the best ambassadors in the countries where they reside and operate was underlined, as well as the need for a modern approach and an integrated policy for expatriates, aiming at strengthening their ties with their particular homelands and their maximum possible utilization for the promotion of the goals and well-intentioned interests of Hellenism.
The Speaker of the Parliament noted the need for greater investment in the younger generations of the diaspora and the added value of parliamentary diplomacy through initiatives and actions, particularly in the context of the parliamentary dimension of the trilateral cooperation between Greece and Cyprus with countries of the wider region. Only through cooperation in the framework of a multi-level foreign policy can the two countries manage the challenges we are facing, Demetriou said.

Mr. Kotsiras informed Mrs. Demetriou about the plans launched by the Greek Government for the formulation of a coherent and integrated policy for Greek Expatriates and stressed the importance of using the means and advantages provided by the rapidly evolving technology to reach the diaspora, especially young people.
Finally, the importance of cooperation and coordination between the two countries on diaspora issues was stressed and views were exchanged on possible initiatives and actions in this direction.
