The Speaker of the House of Representatives Anita Demetriou received today the Ambassador of Serbia Marko Blagojević on the occasion of the completion of his mandate in Cyprus.
During the meeting, the Speaker thanked Mr Blagojević for the excellent cooperation between the House of Representatives and the Embassy of Serbia during his long term of office in Cyprus and wished him every success in his new duties. She noted Mr Blagojević's substantial contribution to further strengthening the already excellent relations between Cyprus and Serbia and the Parliaments of the two countries.
The President of the House of Representatives underlined that the fraternal relations between Cyprus and Serbia are based on common principles, their historical ties and mutual support on issues of major importance for each country. Demetriou expressed sincere thanks for Serbia's firm principled stand and support for the Cyprus problem and the efforts to solve it in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. At the same time, he reiterated Cyprus' firm, principled support to Serbia, both on the Kosovo issue and on Serbia's accession path towards the European Union (EU). Our response must be the same in all cases of violation of international law and our common principles, she stressed.
The Serbian Ambassador reaffirmed his country's principled position in favour of the solution of the Cyprus problem, in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions, and expressed gratitude for Cyprus' firm support for the Kosovo issue and Serbia's European course.
During the meeting, the prospects for further strengthening exchanges and cooperation, especially at the parliamentary level, as well as issues of broader interest were discussed, with particular emphasis on the situation in the Middle East.
