The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs. Anita Demetriou received today a delegation of NEPOMAK, headed by the President of the organization Mr. Christos Tuton, which is in Cyprus to participate in the World Congress of Cypriots in Diaspora.
Welcoming the delegation, the President of the Parliament stressed the important role played by the young people of the diaspora as "ambassadors" of Cyprus in the countries where they live and operate, for the defence of the rights and interests of their homeland.
Condemning the new provocations by the Turkish occupation army inside the buffer zone near the village of Pyla, the Speaker of the House underlined that such illegal actions undermine the efforts for the reunification of Cyprus and stressed the need for the resumption of talks to reach a just and viable solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions.
The President of the Parliament noted that the encouragement and greater participation of young people in public life and especially in political life, as a necessary component of democracy, is a priority for her and the House, through various initiatives and actions. Young people must be given space and their voice must be heard, she stressed. To this end, Demetriou pointed out, the proper use of social media and the protection of everyone, especially women and young people, from the toxic environment of hate speech is necessary.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives referred to the constitutional system of the Republic of Cyprus and the role, responsibilities and work of the House of Representatives. Finally, she noted the initiatives and actions developed by the House within the framework of parliamentary diplomacy and for the purpose of improving society's understanding of the work of the Parliament, making special reference to the internship programme for students at the House of Representatives.
A debate followed during which the President of the Parliament answered questions from members of the delegation.
