The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs.Anita Demetriou, received today the new Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Cyprus, Mr.Alireza Salarian, on the occasion of his inauguration.
During the meeting, the President of the Parliament expressed concern about the flare-up in the Middle East, stressing the importance of dialogue and cooperation in order to achieve conditions of peace and stability in the wider region and to prevent any further deterioration of the situation. It was common to note the added value of parliamentary diplomacy in achieving this goal.
We condemn all forms of terrorism wherever it comes from and remain committed to dialogue and diplomacy for the peaceful resolution of disputes, Demetriou stressed. Referring to the current developments regarding the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem, in view of the arrival in Cyprus of the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General, the President of the Parliament underlined the commitment of our side to the objective of resuming the talks from the point where they were interrupted in Crans Montana, in order to reach a solution of a bizonal, bicommunal federation in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions. The Turkish claim for a "two-state" solution, Demetriou stressed, cannot be accepted, as it would legitimise the achievements of the Turkish invasion and occupation. The Speaker also deplored the intensifying Turkish provocations in the enclosed area of Famagusta and within the buffer zone. Demetriou noted that it is also beneficial for Turkey to cooperate in reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem, in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions, and stressed that such a development will create significant prospects for the benefit of the entire Cypriot people and the wider region.
The Iranian Ambassador reaffirmed his country's principled stand and support for efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. Salarian noted the friendly relations between the two countries since ancient times and expressed willingness to further strengthen them, making special reference to their parliamentary dimension at the bilateral and multilateral levels.
