[PIO] The Speaker of the House of Representatives received the leader of the opposition in Greece

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Anita Demetriou received today the President of the Coalition of Radical Left - Progressive Alliance (SYRIZA-PS), Mr. Mr. Kasselakis was accompanied by MPs Irini Kasimatis and Evangelos Apostolakis. The meeting was attended by the Ambassador of Greece to Cyprus Mr. Ioannis Papameletiou.

During the meeting, the excellent cooperation relations between Cyprus and Greece and the importance of coordination and synergy to address violations of international law and other serious challenges that threaten democracy, human rights and the rule of law, which, as Mrs. Demetriou said that the ongoing efforts to resume talks on the Cyprus problem are at a critical juncture, amid intensifying Turkish provocations, aimed at creating new fait accompli, but also in the light of global crises and changes. He underlined the importance of maintaining a united and strong front, particularly on major national issues, including the Cyprus problem. Particular emphasis was also placed on the important role of the diaspora and the importance of further strengthening ties and cooperation with expatriates from Greece and Cyprus around the world.

Views were also exchanged on issues of common interest, including the need for greater representation of women and youth in political life and the need to further promote transparency and accountability in order to regain citizens' trust in institutions.
