The President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Nicos Christodoulides, welcomed yesterday the proceedings of the United Nations High Level Forum on Sustainable Development entitled "Unity and Solidarity: Strengthening the multilateral system for enhanced support, cooperation, expansion and review", held in the context of the 78th United Nations General Assembly in New York.

In his address, the President of the Republic said, among other things, that eight years ago at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, the participating States agreed to set 17 goals covering the full range of sustainable development, noting, however, that despite efforts, we are still far from achieving the goals set.

He also added that, nevertheless, today there are new tools at the disposal of states to achieve these goals, such as advanced technology, digital transition, but also a greater understanding and perception of the problems that exist.

President Christodoulides pointed out that in order to implement the 2030 Agenda, which has been set as a goal towards Sustainable Development, the inequalities and the lack of trust that exists within the multilateral system must be effectively addressed.

He stressed that measures should be taken to this end so that everyone can regain confidence in this system based on international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, since these are the only guarantee for peace and security, as well as for the implementation of the goals of the 2030 Agenda.

President Christodoulides noted that all states have been affected by the various global crises, stressing however that absolute unity and collective action is the key to successful management.

"Either we rise to the occasion and overcome our differences, demonstrating our commitment to the future of generations to come, or we stand on the sidelines and let everything we have worked for fall apart," President Christodoulides said.

Finally, he said that the next seven years will be a test where the actions taken will be judged, noting the so much that can be achieved when there is unity.
