The President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Mr. Nikos Dendias, who is in Cyprus to commemorate the black anniversary of the coup.
Welcoming Mr. Dendias, the President of the Republic said: "We always welcome you with great pleasure to Cyprus. Our friendship is long-standing, I have seen in practice what it means as a colleague in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
I will dwell on another dimension, and I think it is very appropriate that you are here today, on the day of the treasonous coup, a visit which also sends very specific messages about the clear separation of responsibilities of the Athens Junta.
The Greek Governments, since then, have always stood by Cypriot Hellenism, in its effort, which has one and only one goal: the liberation and reunification of the country.
And in this effort, both the present Greek Government and you personally, who stand by us, not just through fine statements, which for a time was the characteristic of relations [OF GOVERNMENTS OF OTHER PERIODS], but through concrete and substantial actions. It is a great pleasure to have you with us today."
For his part, Dendias said: "Mr. President, Niko, obviously the 15th of July was not chosen by chance. I fully understand the symbolism, I said it clearly earlier in the statements I made with Vassilis [PALMA]. The junta coup had tragic consequences. From then on, Hellenism has followed a different trajectory. Our relations are what they should be with cordiality, love and interest in resolving the great national issue. And I hope that we deserve, you deserve in your presidency, to escape from these 50 years of occupation and division."
