The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides received today, at the Presidential Palace, the annual reports of the Commissioner for Administration and Human Rights Protection, Mrs.Maria Stylianou Lottidis, for 2021 and 2022.

Delivering the reports, Ms. Lottidi said, among other things.

She added that she also delivers separate reports of the Equality and Anti-Discrimination Body and the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture, which are part of the Commissioner's responsibilities.

Ms. Lottidi noted that the reports show an increase in citizens' complaints about benefits issues, adding that civil service issues recede slightly compared to disability issues, while there are not many cases of discrimination except for disability issues.

For his part, the President said that the Government attaches great importance to both the Commissioner's reports and the responsibilities of her Office because they touch on one of the most important issues, human rights.

He added: "It is very natural that most of the complaints concern benefits, social policy in general, which for us are matters of particular importance.

And it is for this reason that I often say that a responsible fiscal policy is the one that will allow us to respond also to the demands of society, to the complaints that are made, most of which I fully understand."

He added that the Government approaches non-governmental organisations as partners, considering that in many cases the requests they make are fully justified.

The President pointed out: "Recently, for example, I had a meeting with organised groups of disabled people and one of the issues we discussed - and I even decided to proceed immediately with a public consultation, which is to start on 15 January so that we can submit legislation to Parliament immediately afterwards - concerns benefit policy and the fact that there is no uniform legislation for disabled people.

You understand that this is a distortion and that is why the issues you are dealing with are of particular importance to us and in this context we will study the reports with due importance."
