The President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Anastasiades received today, at the Presidential Palace, a delegation of the Pancyprian Coordinating Council for Volunteerism, which presented him with a cheque containing the proceeds of a fundraiser for the fire victims in the districts of Larnaca and Limassol.
Handing over the cheque, the President of the Council Mr. Elias Demetriou said that "the volunteer movement is always present in the difficult situations that exist in the Cypriot society and not only. It is a timeless course concerning fundraisers in Cyprus and abroad."
He also referred to the excellent cooperation between the Council and the Commissioner for Citizens, Panagiotis Sentonas, regarding the aid sent to Ukraine "feeling the pain of the refugee crisis that Cyprus had gone through in 1974", he said.
For his part, President Anastasiades expressed warm thanks and congratulations "because the volunteer movement in Cyprus has developed to such an extent that it has become a model for many European and other countries through the humanitarian assistance it provides in times of need and not only for the Cypriot people, but also for those other countries in need through catastrophic consequences.
And it has shown the Cypriot people, especially through the voluntary movement, that they have humanity, that they have that alloy of mentality that they cannot remain indifferent to what is happening on our planet."
He added that the amount handed over by the Council, which amounts to 16,300 euros, will be deposited at the General Accounting Office for the needs of the fire victims and wished every progress in the efforts made by the Council.
For his part, the President of EPOE EOSEK Mr. Antonis Chrysostomou handed over a cheque for 20,000 euros on behalf of the trade union organization of ATIK, noting that ATIK employees are present in various community projects such as fundraisers, tree planting and other activities.
In addition, he personally thanked the President of the Republic for the issue of the non-incorporation of ATHK with the withdrawal of a relevant bill, as well as for the abolition of the provision of the Regulation on excess staff in ATHK, which was abolished after 60 years in force by a political decision of President Anastasiades.
For his part, the President of the Republic expressed thanks to the employees of ATHK who, "inspired by the same spirit of volunteerism, have today demonstrated how interested they are not only in trade union issues, but also in any social or other problems that arise", noting that "your multifaceted, multifaceted action proves that healthy trade unionism is what leads to success".
Finally, he said that the issues that were of concern to the unions were given solutions due to the wisdom of the trade unions, as well as the Government's assessment of rationality in order to avoid misguided adventures.
