The President of the Republic Mr.Nikos Christodoulides received a congratulatory message from the President of the Hellenic Republic Mrs.Katerina Sakellaropoulou, on the occasion of the 63rd anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus.
In her message, President Sakellaropoulou said, among other things, that "respect for Cyprus' independence, constant cooperation and full coordination with the Government of Cyprus constitute the cornerstone of Greece's policy on the Cyprus problem, which is a constant concern and a top national priority of Greek foreign policy.
Our goal is the withdrawal of all illegal occupation troops and the abolition of the anachronistic system of guarantees and unilateral rights of intervention in Cypriot affairs, within the framework of an agreed and comprehensive, just and viable solution, based on the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions and with the unimpeded implementation of the European acquis throughout the territory of the Republic of Cyprus.
The solution we seek can only be found through negotiations within the framework of the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.
As long as Turkey continues to persist in its unacceptable claims for a 'two-state solution', in its methodologies for imposing new fait accompli on the ground, as well as in its ongoing campaign for the international upgrading of the illegal secessionist entity of the occupied territories, there is little room for optimism.
Turkish and Turkish Cypriot intransigence and Turkish attempts to impose new fait accompli will not weaken my country's full and active support for efforts to resume negotiations in the UN framework.
In any case, I would like to assure you once again that Greece will resolutely make every effort until the Cypriot cause is vindicated with the reunification of Cyprus, on the basis of respect for democratic principles, human rights and fundamental freedoms of all Cypriot citizens, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots."
