The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides chaired a meeting of the National Council at the Presidential Palace today.

After the meeting, the Government Spokesman Mr: "The President of the Republic announces today the composition of the Cyprus Political Group, which consists of: Panagiotis Demetriou, Chris Triantaphyllides, George Koukoumas, George Loukaides, Christiana Erotokritou, Chrissis Pantelides, Stavros Angelides, George Georgiou, Menelaos Kyprianou, George Poizis, Christos Iosifides and Kyriakos Tsimillis.

The role of the Group will be advisory to the President of the Republic, while in the near future President Christodoulides will announce the Cyprus Legal Group."

Referring to the National Council, the Spokesman said: "This is the sixth time that you have convened the National Council under President Christodoulides."

During today's meeting, the President of the Republic informed the members of the National Council about the contacts he had made in the previous period both with the personal envoy of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General (UNSG) Ms. Holguín and with the UNSG himself, Mr. Guterres in Brussels last month, and the necessary exchange of views took place in view of the forthcoming visit of Mrs Holguín, who is expected to visit Cyprus in the first ten days of May.

The President of the Republic also discussed in detail the Conclusions of the last European Council, which, as we know, included a clear link between the progress of the Euro-Turkish relations and the progress on the Cyprus problem, the result of the Government's efforts for a year. It was, after all, this approach, this strategy, which the President of the Republic had the opportunity to present at the first meeting of the National Council last March, a year ago.

And we believe that what has been achieved sends a positive, very concrete message to Turkey through a gradual, proportional and reversible approach that we sought from the very beginning.

The members of the National Council have presented specific positions and views, which are certainly being taken into account by the President of the Republic and will be evaluated. A very productive discussion was held in a very constructive atmosphere with a constructive attitude from all members of the National Council.

The President of the Republic also briefed the members of the National Council on the Migration issue and on the measures taken by the Government both internally and in the contacts taking place at the diplomatic level, as well as on his upcoming visit together with the President of the European Commission to Lebanon on 2 May, and also updated on the progress, on the next steps in the Republic of Cyprus' Amalthea initiative to establish a maritime corridor for the delivery of humanitarian aid to the civilian population of Gaza and how the infrastructure that the US is building in Gaza will allow for the increase and intensity of the flow by which humanitarian aid will reach the civilian population of Gaza."

Asked if the Guterres proposal is still on the table, the Spokesman said: "We are expecting Ms. Holguín in the first ten days of May, when she is scheduled to meet with the President, to see what the next steps are in relation to the Secretary-General's proposal, which we are still waiting to see how it can be implemented. We have expressed our positive response from the outset and we believe that any action by the UN, particularly the UN Secretary General, towards the effort to resume negotiations is in the right direction."
