The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides chaired a meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Presidential Palace today: "The Council of Ministers today approved a proposal by the Minister of Finance to extend measures to compensate for the cost of living of households. The measures are part of the implementation of targeted measures, taking into account fiscal conditions and challenges, as well as climatic conditions during the summer period.
Specifically, the Council of Ministers decided:
- to extend the measure of a graduated subsidy of the electricity consumption billing price for the billing months July-October 2024, for electricity bills metered until 31/10/2024, covering residential, commercial and industrial consumers, while for vulnerable consumers the subsidy covers 100% of the increase in the electricity consumption billing price.
The cost of the extension amounts to €12 million and affects 400,000 households and 100,000 businesses.
- to extend the application of the zero VAT rate on basic goods until 30/09/2024.
The total cost of the extension amounts to €11 million.
The responsible, prudent and fiscal policy that the Government is pursuing, far from populism, far from parochialism, is the basis, on the one hand, for the Cypriot economy to be successively upgraded, to have this positive image and to become an attractive investment destination, where we can also attract quality investments in our country and, on the other hand, to be able to take targeted measures that substantially improve the daily life of our fellow citizens.
At the same time, we continue to intensively implement President Christodoulides' governance programme to take measures to permanently address the energy shortage, such as the rapid acceleration of the green transition in our country."
