The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides chaired a meeting of the Council of Ministers at the Presidential Palace today: "The Council of Ministers today approved the bill on the appointment of the Deputy Minister of Presidency for European Affairs, in view of the assumption of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026.
The bill will be submitted to the House of Representatives for passage into law and immediate appointment, by an act of the President of the Republic, of the Deputy Minister, who will be in charge of the preparations for the Cyprus Presidency. His term of office shall commence on a date to be determined by the President of the Republic in the Act of Appointment and shall expire on 31 July 2026.
As the assumption of the 2nd Cyprus Presidency creates, inter alia, (a) additional specific obligations with regard to the representation of the Republic of Cyprus at the political level in the General Affairs Council, as well as before the European Parliament, (b) the need for appropriate preparatory work for the adequate briefing and coordination of the various Services of the Republic and (c) the need to carry out a series of e His/her responsibilities will include. In this context, he/she will be responsible for coordinating:
(i) the programme and priorities of the Cyprus Presidency,
(ii) the organisation of meetings to be held, as well as other organisational matters,
(iii) the communication strategy, in close cooperation with the Government Spokesperson and the Press and Information Office.
(d) The Deputy Minister will be present during discussions before the Council of Ministers on matters within his/her competence and the submission of relevant briefing notes, but will not participate in the decision-making process.
