At a time when peace in our region and the world is a reminder that there are no frozen conflicts, the achievement of peace in Cyprus will send a clear message for peace in the region and worldwide, President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said tonight.

Addressing the event of the United Nations Association for Human Rights and the United Nations, held tonight at the Presidential Palace, the President of the Republic referred, inter alia, to the vital role of the United Nations in the protection of human rights around the world, as well as to the United Nations Charter.

The President of the Republic underlined his conviction that in an ever-changing global geopolitical environment, human rights, the fight against injustice and the prevention of conflicts are becoming even more important.

He also noted that human rights in Cyprus remain a tragically unfulfilled promise for all Cypriots as a result of Turkey's invasion and continued occupation of Cyprus since 1974, which is also a violation of the UN Charter, UN Security Council resolutions, human rights and European law.

He added that all Cypriots - Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins - deserve to have the same human rights as all European citizens, as well as prosperity through co-existence and co-creation in a reunited country where their human rights and fundamental freedoms are respected and safeguarded

"In this sense, the United Nations, the Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights remain the most important tools at our disposal for the reunification of our country, in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions," President Christodoulides said.

The President of the Republic also underlined that "there are long-standing and historical ties between Cyprus and the United Nations. The United Nations has played and continues to play an important role through the peacekeeping mission, UNFICYP, the longest serving UN peacekeeping force in the world, but also through the UN Good Offices in Cyprus."

He added that at a time when peace in our region and in the world is a reminder that there are no frozen conflicts, peace in Cyprus will send a clear message of peace to the region and to the world which desperately needs it.

"The United Nations, in keeping with the principles of the United Nations Charter and Security Council resolutions, has a vital role to play in facilitating efforts to resume negotiations to end the occupation and reunify Cyprus on the basis of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions for a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality.

I have repeatedly stated my commitment to taking all necessary steps to resume the negotiation process so that we can finally enjoy a peaceful, prosperous and united Cyprus.

I am confident that the United Nations, through the Good Offices of the Secretary-General, as well as his newly appointed Personal Envoy, will continue to be our partner in this effort for peace and to safeguard the human rights of all Cypriots," the President of the Republic concluded.
