The Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs Anita Demetriou received today the Director General for Structural Reform Support of the European Commission (DG REFORM) Mr Mario Nava, who during his visit to Cyprus is conducting contacts with the two communities, within the framework of his responsibilities.
During the meeting, aspects of the Cyprus problem were discussed regarding the need to strengthen confidence building between the two communities in Cyprus, the implementation of Regulation 866/2004 ("Green Line Regulation"), as well as the need to resume talks with a view to a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. They also discussed issues related to the forthcoming elections of the European Parliament.
The President of the Parliament, after being informed about the actions of the European Commission's Directorate General for Structural Reform Support regarding the rapprochement between the two communities, expressed her satisfaction, while stressing the need to take further actions in order to give the necessary impetus for the resumption of the talks on the Cyprus problem, which is facing the negative attitude of the Turkish side. In this context, Mr. Nava informed the President of the Parliament about the increase of the total value of products that fall under legal trade through the "green line" in the framework of the relevant European Regulation, as well as about the facilitation of the activity and cooperation of the chambers of commerce of the two communities, in particular through the creation by the European Commission of the One-Stop-Shop. Mr. Nava also referred to the project for the creation of a bi-communal solar park, as well as to the hope created by the commercial activity between the two communities towards the creation of "common ground" for the resumption of talks, citing as an example the registration of halo as an example. Through the contacts carried out on both sides, he said, the will, at the level of society, for the reunification of the island is evident.
After welcoming the institutional initiatives taken by the European Union (EU) to create a climate of confidence and promote a solution to the Cyprus problem, the Speaker of the House of Representatives stressed the need to resume talks in this direction, underlining that she considers unacceptable the Turkish claim for a "two-state solution" in Cyprus, as well as the refusal of the Turkish side to even come to a meeting and dialogue. Mrs Demetriou also stressed the need for political leaders to support with their own attitude the positive climate that is being created at the level of society, in order to make the reunification of Cyprus possible.
Finally, Mrs Demetriou assured Mr Nava, who is completing his term of office at the Directorate General for Supporting Structural Reforms, that the House of Representatives will continue to support him in his work and in the context of the new tasks he is about to undertake at European level.
