The Speaker of the House of Representatives Mrs. Anita Demetriou received today a delegation of the Pyroi Community Council led by its President and the Refugee Association "To Pyroi" for the delivery of a protest resolution on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the occupation of the Pyroi Community by the Turkish troops.

As is known, Pyroi was occupied by the Turkish troops two days after the agreed ceasefire, which was announced on 16 August 1974, with the result that the 600 inhabitants of the village have since been displaced and remain in refugee status for 50 years, without the possibility of visiting their village, since, despite the opening of the roadblocks, access to this place is absolutely forbidden by the occupying regime.

In delivering the protest resolution, both the President of the Pyroi Community Council and the President of the refugee association "To Pyroi" reiterated their commitment to efforts to find a just, viable and functional solution, to end the occupation and colonization of Cyprus and called again for the disengagement of the area and the opening of the Pyroio roadblock passage, which will undoubtedly be beneficial for the Athienou-Larnaca area, but which is being denied by the Turkish occupation army. They also expressed great concern about the information they have regarding the condition of the occupied church of the community, which is in a state of collapse and in need of immediate shoring up.

On receiving the resolution, the Speaker of the Parliament expressed her full support for the residents of the occupied community, while referring to the prospect of the resumption of talks and the efforts made by our side to this end, stressing the need for everyone to demonstrate a constructive spirit in order to overcome the intransigence of the Turkish side.
