The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou had a private meeting today with the President of the European Parliament (EP), Mrs Roberta Metsola, who is on a two-day working visit to Cyprus in view of the upcoming elections for the election of MEPs. The President of the EP was accompanied by senior officials of the EP and the EP Office in Cyprus. Metsola's visit to Cyprus in view of the forthcoming European elections, which, she said, gives a strong message of unity to all European citizens regarding the need to turn out in large numbers at the polls and, consequently, to defend the principles and values on which the European Union (EU) is based, against extreme ideologies and divisive voices. The exercise of the right to vote by all is the greatest expression of democracy, which will determine the course and the future of the European Union.
Referring to the current situation regarding the Cyprus problem, the President of the Parliament reaffirmed our side's commitment to the objective of resuming talks to reach a just and viable solution, on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, with political equality, as set out in the relevant UN Resolutions.
The Speaker also referred to the particular challenges facing Cyprus as a result of the alarmingly increasing migratory flows, a development that confronts the Republic of Cyprus with a disproportionate challenge compared to its size and potential and called for the EU's immediate assistance in addressing it.
The EP President noted that the purpose of her visit is to send a message of a united Europe that listens to citizens' concerns and responds to their needs.
Regarding the Cyprus problem, Mrs Metsola underlined that as long as Cyprus remains divided, the EU will not be complete and reaffirmed the EP's support for the objective of reaching a solution to the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation, in line with the relevant UN Resolutions.
Expressing full understanding of the disproportionate challenge that Cyprus faces in the face of increasing migratory pressures, Ms. Metsola said that no country should be left alone to face this challenge and that the legislative package on Immigration and Asylum is due to be voted on by the EP plenary next week.
