The Speaker of the House of Representatives Anita Demetriou met today with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić, in the framework of her official visit to Cyprus. The meeting was also attended by the Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the Council of Europe, Mr Dimitris Hatziargyrou. These positions, Demetriou pointed out, are reflected in the important Resolution on the need for the return of Famagusta to its legal inhabitants, recently adopted by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Burić expressed her support for the efforts of the UN Secretary General for the resumption of negotiations aimed at resolving the Cyprus problem on the basis of a bicommunal, bizonal federation, in accordance with the relevant UN Resolutions. She also praised Cyprus' high degree of compliance with the decisions of the European Court of Human Rights. He noted that Cyprus' participation in all institutions and generally in the whole range of the Organization's activities has yielded tangible results in terms of strengthening democratic institutions, but also added value to the lives of Cypriot citizens.
The common conviction that the current complex challenges require collective solutions, which must be in line with international and European law and respect for human rights. Finally, views were exchanged on the situation in Ukraine after the Russian invasion, but also on possible ways to better regulate the use of artificial intelligence, the need to curb extreme ideologies in Europe, the strengthening of democratic representation, in particular of young people and women, as well as how to deal more effectively with hate speech and the spread of fake news on social media.
