The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, addressed an audiovisual message at the international ceremony for the European Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust of the Sinti and Roma, held today at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.
In her message, the President stressed that the heinous crimes committed against the Sinti and Roma communities represent the darkest chapter of European history and the greatest crime against humanity. She also stressed that we will never forget the important contribution of these communities to Europe's cultural heritage and history, nor the untold suffering and pain they endured.
Demetriou stressed the importance of preserving the testimonies of Holocaust survivors in order to avoid the repetition of such atrocities. She also expressed concern about the rise of extreme political ideologies and far-right parties in Europe, which propagate hate speech, xenophobia and anti-Semitism, and stressed the need for vigilance to protect the rights of minorities and vulnerable groups.
The President stressed that it is the primary responsibility of political leaders to meet the expectations of citizens and work to ensure their progress and prosperity in order to prevent extreme political ideologies from gaining influence through the exploitation of human despair. In this regard, Demetriou highlighted the collective responsibility of leaders to promote inclusion, acceptance and respect for diversity, while noting the importance of preserving the memory of the Holocaust and raising awareness of the lessons learned from it for future generations. Finally, she stressed the need for close cooperation between political leaders to eliminate discrimination, racism and hatred, phenomena which, as the President of the Parliament pointed out, have no place in democratic and civilised societies.
