The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides today attended an event marking the 75th anniversary of the closure of the camps where Jews rescued from the Holocaust lived, at the former British Military Hospital (BMH) in Nicosia.

In his address to the event, the President of the Republic said, among other things, that "this year's anniversary is of particular significance, as it takes place after the unspeakable terrorist attacks of 7 October which we condemn in abhorrence.

These camps, 12 in total, were located all over Cyprus and operated from 1946 to 1949. After the end of World War II and before the creation of the State of Israel, some 53,000 Jews passed through Cyprus and the camps of Karolou, north of Famagusta, Dhekelia and Xylotympou."

He added that thousands of Jewish children were born in Cyprus, noting that during the Jews' stay on the island many Cypriots rushed to support and help them, making special mention of Prodromos Papavasileiou, a pioneer in providing assistance to the Jews who found themselves in Cyprus.

Finally, the President of the Republic noted: "I wanted to attend this event because today we honour the strength of the human spirit, human dignity, but also compassion and solidarity among people."
