The Speaker of the House of Representatives Ms Anita Demetriou received today the Deputy Minister of European Affairs Ms Marilena Raouna and her team in their first meeting since taking office as Deputy Minister, in the context of the preparations for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in the first half of 2026.
Welcoming the Deputy Minister, the Speaker of the Parliament stressed the great importance of harmonious cooperation between the Legislative and Executive Powers, in order to enable the state to successfully accomplish the great challenge ahead of it with the forthcoming assumption of the Presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2026.
For her part, Mrs Rauna stressed that the proper preparation and successful exercise of the Cyprus Presidency is a top priority for the present Government, but also a national mission from which the House of Representatives and the important role it is called upon to play are not excluded.
Mrs Raouna also gave an extensive and in-depth briefing to the Speaker of the House of Representatives on all aspects of the Government's plans at an organisational, substantive and infrastructural level. He said that the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency will be precisely defined, after consultation with all ministries and the House of Representatives, stressing at the same time that particular importance is attached to the promotion of the parliamentary dimension, in the context of the forthcoming Presidency and the inter-parliamentary actions planned.
They also discussed more general issues concerning the future of the EU and its preparation to face future crises, as well as the issue of qualified majority voting and the abolition of unanimity, which should be addressed by the two authorities in joint meetings.
