During today's meeting of the Political Affairs and Democracy Committee of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) in Oslo, the Rapporteur of the Committee on the topic "Call for the return of Famagusta to its legitimate inhabitants", Italian MP Mr. Piero Fassino presented his preliminary resolution and report, which were adopted by a majority and a number of amendments were also discussed. The Turkish Members present in the Commission voted against this Report and Resolution, and announced their intention to submit an "Opposition Opinion".

In his intervention, Commission Member Mr. George Loukaides, thanked the Rapporteur for his Report, noting that it reflected the importance the CSTO attached to the general situation in Cyprus as regards the resolution of the Cyprus problem and the specific issue of Famagusta.

Mr. Loucaides reiterated the commitment of the Greek Cypriot side to the need to implement UN Security Council Resolutions 550 and 789 which provide for the return of Famagusta to its legitimate inhabitants under UN administration. He appealed to the Turkish side to abandon its unacceptable claim for a "two-state" solution in Cyprus and return to the negotiating table for a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem. It also criticised any action aimed at consolidating the division and legitimising the fait accompli of the Turkish invasion and continued occupation, noting that the opening of part of the enclosed city of Famagusta by the occupying forces is contrary to all relevant UN resolutions and previous resolutions of the CSTO.

The Preliminary Resolution and Report on Famagusta will be submitted to the Plenary for final adoption at the forthcoming June session of the CSTO.
