The Advisory Committee for the Creation of an Archive of the History of Greek Cypriot Education (AIEKE) of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth (YPAN) and the House of Cyprus, held the opening of the photographic exhibition on Manuscripts of Education and Freedom in Cyprus 15th-19th century. The opening took place on Tuesday, 30 January 2024, at the House of Cyprus in Athens. The event was held under the auspices of the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr Athena Michaelides.
The event was attended and greeted by the Director General of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr Marina Ioannou-Hasapi, on behalf of the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, and by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens, Mr Stavros Avgoustidis, on behalf of the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens, Mr Lucas Xenophontos, Cultural Counsellor. Dr Marina Ioannou-Hasapi placed particular emphasis on the values of Education and Freedom, which are the basis for the smooth functioning of any democratic society. In addition, she stressed the importance of this initiative, since it promotes the operation of a central, coherent Historical Archive of Greek Education in Cyprus on the one hand and contributes to the creation of historical and archival awareness among teachers and students on the other hand. The Cultural Councillor noted that we have the privilege and the responsibility to be the bearers of an age-old and rich language, which also functions as a cohesive element of our nation.
In her introduction, the Secretary of the Advisory Committee for the Creation of an Archive of the History of Greek Cypriot Education (AIEKE) of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr. Paula Hatzineofytou, informed the audience that the transfer and promotion of this exhibition in Athens, in the heart of metropolitan Hellenism, aims to make the exhibits known to the Greek public. He also mentioned that the manuscripts, photographs of which are exhibited in the hall, are a sample of the many that exist in the ecclesiastical libraries and other archival sites of the Megalonesos.
The keynote speaker was Dr. Nasa Patapiou, Historian - Researcher, member of the Advisory Committee for the Creation of an Archive of the History of Greek Cypriot Education. In her speech, entitled "Historical Path of Greek Cypriot Education towards Freedom", which was accompanied by a richly illustrated presentation, Dr Patapiou said, among other things, that the data presented at the event testify and demonstrate that the Greek language was not only spoken by the majority of the inhabitants of Cyprus, but was also taught in monasteries, churches and by individuals. He also pointed out that during the years of Ottoman rule, the inter-teaching method had been introduced in Cypriot education. Greek schools or Scholarchia, as the secondary schools were called, operated in the 19th century in the largest cities of the island, Nicosia, Larnaca and Limassol. Finally, he referred to the development of women's education as late as 1859, when, on the initiative of Archbishop Makarios I, the first Nicosia Parthenagogue School was founded.
Dr Agamemnon Tselikas, through his own intervention, provided signposts for this exhibition. He pointed out that this is a peculiar exhibition, where each manuscript painting depicts in a visual way the subject matter of a lesson both in the schools of that era and in today's schools. A variety of scripts and book decorations are presented, ways of displaying the texts according to their teaching use, such as the Mathematical and philosophical texts on Aristotelian Logic.
The opening event was concluded with music by Doros Demosthenous and Neocles Neofytidis. This was followed by a guided tour of the exhibition by Dr. Agamemnon Tselikas. The exhibition will be on display at the House of Cyprus in Athens (Xenophontos 2A, Syntagma) and will run until 27 February 2024.
The general supervision of the event was provided by Dr. Paula Hatzineofytou, First Officer of Education of the Ministry of Education and Secretary of the Advisory Committee for the Creation of an Archive of the History of Greek Cypriot Education.
The Hellenic Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses its sincere thanks to all those who contributed to the realization and success of this event, especially the House of Cyprus in Athens, the Pedagogical Institute and OPAP Cyprus.
