The Ministry of Foreign Affairs unequivocally condemns the Turkish President's new provocative statements on the illegal invasion of Cyprus in 1974.
With the completion of 50 years of occupation and ongoing violation of the fundamental freedoms and basic human rights of Cypriots, the Turkish President's statements are an insult to the victims of Turkish atrocities and remind the international community of the real intentions of the invader.
The public rhetoric, based on threat, aggression and cynical expansionism, is completely at odds with the principles and values of the European Union (EU), the United Nations Charter and international legitimacy.
The Turkish President's statements constitute evidence of the ongoing threat to the territorial integrity and security of the Republic of Cyprus, and echo the ongoing violations on the ground and the consolidation of the Turkish military presence in occupied Cyprus.
They are part of the Turkish methods of undermining the effort to resume negotiations aimed at the reunification of Cyprus. However, they will in no way succeed in distracting us from our goal of resolving the Cyprus problem, ending the Turkish occupation and abolishing the anachronistic guarantees.
The Foreign Ministry is taking all necessary steps to inform the international community, including the United Nations (UN) and the EU.
