The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth expresses its deepest sorrow at the death of Kika Olympiou, a distinguished philologist, who made a significant contribution to the educational and cultural life of Cyprus.
Kika Olympiou was born in 1939 in the village of Marathovounos, Famagusta district. She graduated from the Pancyprian Gymnasium and studied Greek Literature at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She worked as a philologist in secondary education and retired as a headmistress. At the same time, she contributed to educational trade unionism, which she served in various positions.
For decades, the deceased was involved in book criticism and book presentation, as well as in the writing of school aids in the field of literature. Much of her writing is scattered in the daily and periodical press. She has been a contributor to the Cyprus Radio Foundation in cultural radio and television broadcasts.
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, in recognition of her many contributions to the field of literature and culture, has offered her the honorary positions of member of the Advisory Committee of the Cyprus Library and of the Advisory Committee of Letters, among others. She was also a member of the Special Committee for the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution in Cyprus.
Kika Olympiou, a tireless educator and a staunch philanthropist, leaves behind as a precious legacy her appeal and passion for what elevates and ennobles man, her love for education and quality books.
At her funeral, the Minister of Education, Culture, Sport and Youth, Mr Prodromos Prodromou, will deliver a eulogy.
