The meeting of the Road Safety Council was chaired today by the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Mr.Alexis Vafeadis, in the presence of the Minister of Justice and Public Order Mr.Marios Hartsiotis, members of the Police and other relevant services.
During the meeting, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works referred to the importance of the light signalling system, whose sole purpose is to contribute to the improvement of road safety, and in particular to the reduction of fatal road collisions. The Road Safety Council was advised that at junctions where fixed cameras had been installed, an average of 200 complaints per day had been recorded in the last quarter of 2022, as opposed to 800 recorded in the first few months of the same year. "These figures are encouraging" as to the effectiveness of this measure, the Minister said.
A lengthy discussion followed in relation to the operational problems that have arisen with the implementation of the photo-identification system, and both the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works and the Minister of Justice and Public Order pointed to the need for better public information. It was decided to immediately promote information on the operating parameters of the system, while measures will be taken to improve signage at the intersections where the system has been installed.
The practical implementation of the legislation on personal mobility devices (e-scooters) and the issues raised by the operation of companies renting and operating these devices were also discussed. The need for effective supervision of the licensing of the companies licensed by the municipalities was stressed, as well as the general policing of their use. The Minister of Transport, Communications and Works highlighted the need to extend the 30 km/h Speed Limit Zones to encourage the safe use of Personal Mobility Devices and in this direction he will take specific initiatives for the implementation of relevant applications. In addition, the need for amendments to the relevant legislative framework will be assessed in cooperation with the Association of Municipalities.
