The annual events in memory and honor of Archbishop Makarios III, organized by the Historical Cultural Center of Makarios III Panagia every year, on the day of his name day, were held today in his hometown Panagia. The events included the religious memorial service at the Holy Monastery of Chrysorrogiatissi, the March of Love of Arch. This year, the Love March was led by the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Yannis Panagiotou, who represented the President of the Republic at the events and delivered the commemorative speech.

The Minister of Labour drew a parallel between the great march of Archbishop Makarios and the great march of the Cypriot people towards freedom, the struggle for which continues with unity as a prerequisite. Panagiotou pointed out the decisive contribution of Archbishop Makarios to the struggles for self-determination and liberation against Turkandarsia and terrorism, against the coup and the invasion. In particular, he referred to the importance of the distinction between the possible and the desirable, the importance of the historical compromise of the federation and the timelessness of Turkish expansionism that hinders the solution and reunification. The Minister also said that "for the continuation of the anti-secession struggle, the development of the economy and the cohesion of the society is necessary", while underlining the need for unity, he stressed the following: "One people, one homeland, one state, one country: The Cypriot people and the Republic of Cyprus."

Costas Christodoulou, President of the Historical Cultural Centre of Makarios III Panagia, in his speech referred to the work, the contribution and the international reputation of Archbishop Makarios. He thanked the participants of the events and awarded prizes to the students who excelled in the competition for writing an essay on Makarios.
