Minister for Labour: Social justice for citizens' confidence

The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Mr. Gilbert F. Houngbo.

During his address to the plenary session, the Minister of Labour referred to the importance of renewing the social contract and promoting social justice in order to regain citizens' confidence in political institutions. Panagiotou stressed the need to implement policies that improve the daily lives of citizens, with an emphasis on strengthening the adequacy of wages and ensuring decent pension benefits.

In particular, the Minister said that social justice is an imperative and necessary condition for global and lasting peace both among nations and within states that seek normality and stability to improve the well-being of citizens.

During the meeting with the Director-General of the International Labour Organization, the active engagement of Cyprus in the Global Alliance for Social Justice was discussed, through contributing to the development and use of policy-making tools for socially just, tangible and measurable results. The inaugural session of the Global Alliance will take place next Thursday, where Mr Panagiotou will address the session.
