Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou will travel to Brussels today, 24 January 2024, where he will participate in the work of the Informal Meeting of EU Home Affairs Ministers. The focus of the Informal Meeting will be on the situation in Ukraine and the continued granting of temporary protection status by Member States to Ukrainian citizens.

The 27 ministers will exchange views on the challenges for Member States due to the ongoing war situation in the country and the movement of Ukrainians to Member States. Mr Ioannou is expected to raise the issue of creating conditions in the host countries to ensure that Ukrainian citizens have access to health and education services, the labour market and social support programmes.

The Cypriot Minister will underline the need to build on and adapt the actions in place in the case of Ukrainian nationals to address the major challenges posed by migration more broadly. In this context, Mr Ioannou will reiterate the position of the Republic of Cyprus to reassess at EU level the actual conditions in Syria in order to identify safe ways to promote returns to the country.

The Interior Minister returns to Cyprus on Friday, 26 January.
