Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou convened a meeting at the Interior Ministry to discuss ways to mitigate the inequalities created after the 1974 Turkish invasion for refugees, owners of occupied properties.

The meeting was attended by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Central Body for Equal Burden Sharing (K.Dr. Akis Puros and the Director of K.F.I.K.B. Ms. Loukia Efstathiou, as well as officials from the Ministry of Interior, the Department of Cadastre and Land Survey and the Ministry of Finance.

At the meeting a study prepared in 2018 by the Directorate of K.F.I.K.B. was presented to the Minister of Interior, which aims to pay a sum of money in the form of an allowance to Greek Cypriot owners of occupied property. The study was prepared with data available in the Central Information Warehouse from Departments and Services. The discussion included different scenarios for granting assistance, taking into account the number of owners and values of occupied property.

The Minister said that the aim was to find ways to even out inequalities in the way refugees were treated. He noted that it is a common perception that the study contains assumptions which do not provide the required certainty as to the purpose it is intended to serve.

Mr. Ioannou concluded, and after thanking the President and the Director K.F.I.K.B. for the presentation of the study, he asked the President and the Director K.F.I.K.B. to elaborate further recommendations for equitable burden sharing among refugees, based on the financial capacity of the State, so that they can be evaluated for decision making.
