[PIO] The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment will travel to Brussels to participate in the Council of Environment Ministers

The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, leaves today for Brussels, where she will participate in the Council of Environment Ministers that will take place tomorrow, 25 March 2024.

The Environment Council will be chaired by Mr. Alain Maron, Minister of Climate Transition, Environment, Energy and Participatory Democracy of Belgium, and will be attended by Mr. Wopke Hoekstra and Mr. Virginijus Sinkevičius, Commissioners for Climate, Environment and Oceans respectively.

Key issues to be addressed by EU Ministers include the proposal for a Waste Directive, a policy-level discussion on the prevention of plastic granule losses to reduce microplastic pollution and an exchange of views on the Communication on the European Union's climate target for 2040. In addition, the European Commission's Communication on managing climate risks and protecting people and their well-being, and the current state of play on the National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) will be discussed.

During lunch there will be an exchange of views on water resilience, in which Professor Patrick Willems from the University of Leuven will participate.
