Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation between Greece and Cyprus on Environmental Issues

Strengthening bilateral cooperation between Greece and Cyprus, with the aim of promoting sustainable practices and actions concerning important environmental policies, were discussed by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Dr. Maria Panayiotou and the Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change of Greece Mr. Theodoros Skylakakis, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Greece and Theodore Skylakakis, Minister of Environment and Climate Change of Greece and Theodore Skylakakis of Greece.

The two Ministers met yesterday afternoon on the sidelines of the 9th International "Our Ocean Conference" in Athens. Present at the meeting were the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to Greece Mr. Stavros Avgoustidis, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Environment of Greece Mr. Petros Varelidis, the Deputy Director of the Department of Environment Mr. Theodolos Mesimeris, as well as other officials from the Ministries of both countries.

The bilateral meeting emphasized specific joint actions that enhance microclimate development in urban centers, constituting a response to the challenges of climate change.

Furthermore, the issue of urban waste management and the challenges faced by both countries were discussed. In this respect, views and good practices were exchanged with a view to improving recycling systems and the separate collection of municipal waste.

During the meeting, the importance of protecting the sites belonging to the Natura 2000 network was highlighted, with emphasis on the adoption of decrees defining the conservation and integrated management objectives for these sites. At the same time, with a view to their protection and sustainable development, good practices for the assessment of proposed projects that could affect the sites included in the Natura 2000 network were discussed.

Furthermore, in view of the preparation for the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) in 2026, cooperation with the relevant Greek Ministry was agreed upon.

In conclusion, the two Ministers underlined the will to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries for the implementation of sustainable solutions aimed at protecting the environment, highlighting the mutual desire for progress in this area.
