[PIO] The implementation of the European Strategy Project "European Health Data Space" has started

The 1st two-day kick-off meeting held at the offices of the Permanent Representation of Cyprus in Brussels on 29-30 November 2023 for the implementation of the project "Extended EHR@EU Data Space for Primary Use" (Extended EHR@EU Data Space for Primary Use) which is coordinated by Cyprus through the National e-Health Authority (NHEA).

It is the first time that our country is coordinating the work of the Joint Action on health issues of the Member States of the European Union (EU) and the Competent Authorities for eHealth and other Affiliated Entities from all EU Member States including Norway are participating in it.

The aim of the project is to create the standards and specifications for the electronic health record of the citizen in order to enable its interoperability at European level. The ultimate objective is the implementation of the European Health Data Space Regulation and the achievement of the European Health Union. The EU is funding the project with €6 million, which is managed by Cyprus for the needs of the Member States' participations.

During the meeting, the President of EAHY, Professor Christos N. Schizas, stressed that the aim is to define the data that the health record will include, including how it will function, its security, its communication and storage protocols, as well as who will have access to the record and how. The planning of this project will take 30 months but at the same time some pillars of the folder will start to be implemented and put into operation.

In her welcoming address, the Minister of Health of Cyprus Dr. Poppy Kanari stressed the importance of the project for the European citizen and thanked the representatives of the participating countries and the National e-Health Authority for taking over the coordination of the project and wished the success of the objectives of the action.

In his welcome address, Mr. Marco Marsella, Director General of SANTE on behalf of the Commissioner for Health, Mrs. Stella Kyriakidou, stressed the importance of the work that Cyprus undertook to coordinate in order to ensure the correct implementation of the European Regulation on Citizen's Health Data. She expressed the EU's thanks to Cyprus and the Minister of Health, stressing that Cyprus' modern eHealth legislation is a guarantee for the success of the project.

The project "Extended EHR@EU Data Space for Primary Use (Xt-EHR)" supports the political priority of the European Commission for "A Europe fit for the digital age" by implementing the general objective of the "EU4Health" programme for strengthening and cooperation of health systems.
