The Government Spokesman, Mr. Konstantinos Letibiotis, briefed the media today at the Presidential Palace.

In his opening statement, the Spokesman said "The Republic of Cyprus today gave its consent to the appointment of a specific person, proposed by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, to the position of envoy to explore the prospect of resuming negotiations on the Cyprus problem, within the agreed framework and in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council. We hope that a similar positive response to the appointment of this person will be received from the other side as soon as possible. We reiterate our sincere political will and readiness to resume negotiations from the point where they have been suspended, with a view to achieving a viable and final settlement of the Cyprus problem. Our will for a settlement with a solution of a bizonal bicommunal federation with political equality remains strong.

Within this framework and in view of the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to Athens tomorrow for the meeting of the Supreme Cooperation Council between Greece and Turkey, we note that the improvement in Greek-Turkish relations is something that we see as a positive development, intertwined with the Cyprus problem, since this improvement can have a positive impact on the Cyprus problem as well. Athens and Nicosia, in a coordinated manner, are working closely together in order to exhaust every possibility of significant progress on the Cyprus problem.

In relation to the call for expressions of interest for the Board of Directors of the Public Enterprise for Natural Gas (DEFA), it is announced that the period for expressions of interest has been extended until Monday 11 December at 2 pm.

It is recalled that the declaration of interest is posted at gnomodotiko.gov.cy.

ADMIE, after reaching a strategic agreement with Euroasia Interconnector, has been appointed as the Implementing Agency of the Electricity Interconnection Project between Cyprus, Greece and Israel.

ADMIE, after reaching a strategic agreement with Euroasia Interconnector, has been appointed as the Implementing Agency of the Electricity Interconnection Project between Cyprus, Greece and Israel. This flagship project, which will lift the electrical isolation of Cyprus and open a new energy highway in the Eastern Mediterranean, has secured €657 million of European Union funds from the Connecting Europe Facility and is a European Project of Common Interest (PCl). The completion of the project will mark the electrical interconnection of Cyprus, the last non-interconnected Member State of the European Union, with the European transmission system, ensuring at the same time the energy shielding of the island and the reduction of electricity costs.

The project is attracting interest from investment funds of countries in the region."
