The Cyprus problem, the economy and public security issues were among the issues discussed at today's briefing of the Government Spokesman, Mr.
In his statements to journalists at the Presidential Palace, the Spokesman, when asked about the impact on the Cypriot economy of the situation in relation to the Houthi attacks, said: "The impact on the economy, not only in Cyprus, through the insecurity caused by the Houthi attacks is obvious."
At the European Union level on January 22 - the Foreign Minister will participate - the issue will be discussed, where the issue of both security and the economic impact will be raised."
Asked where the issue stands with the creation of a sea corridor for humanitarian aid in Gaza, Letybiotis said: "It is still in the diplomatic contacts we have with the states that have expressed a desire to assist. But you understand that this further development and completion of the initiative also depends on external factors."
Asked what is the latest update in relation to the issue of the Turkish Cypriot arrested in Italy, the Spokesman said: "Today he will be before the court in Rome where he will either accept extradition to the Republic of Cyprus for judicial proceedings to proceed, or the judicial proceedings in Rome will proceed if he challenges the issuance of the warrant. We expect by the end of the day, we are in contact with the relevant Italian authorities for further information."
Asked if the UN Secretary General's personal envoy will have only one meeting with the President of the Republic, the Spokesman said that so far this has been arranged.
He added: "We welcome the fact that her visit will not be a one-day visit, this is something that we had also conveyed to the Secretary-General from the very first moment, that is, that Ms. Holguín's visits should have both frequency, scope and intensity, so that they have the added value that they should have in terms of Ms. Holguín's contribution to the effort to resume negotiations."
Asked whether the Government was considering the issue of Greek Cypriot businessmen and lawyers also operating in the occupied territories, the Spokesman said: "As we have said in a previous update, a range of legal measures that can be implemented in relation in particular to the usurpation of Greek Cypriot property in the occupied areas is something that the Government is considering. The meetings that the Foreign Minister has had with the Legal Service are also relevant, this evaluation of the measures that can be taken is at a very advanced stage and in the next period some of these measures will begin to be activated."
In response to a reporter's remark that the new Minister of Justice made statements in relation to the security of citizens and "before Alectore had spoken" there was an attempted assassination in a public place in the early afternoon and asked what should be done to address this situation which has been prevailing lately with several similar incidents, the Spokesman said: "Ensuring both security itself and the sense of security of the civil society is one of the highest priorities of the state.
The Minister of Justice and Public Order himself yesterday has said exactly that, that there should be - and will be - a much stronger sense of security and policing so that such unacceptable incidents, such unacceptable actions, can be avoided in the future at the same time, these yesterday's and today's outbreaks of crime are before the police and the instructions that have been given, or if you like, the understanding that exists with the police, is to be resolved as soon as possible and those responsible to be brought to justice.
Asked if the President will address the country's situation as the President of the United States does, the Spokesman said: "It is in the President's programme of governance, he has mentioned it in his first speech after his election, in the House of Representatives, that he intends to address both the legislature and the social partners, to present the work that the Government plans to implement in 2024. The exact date of this presentation will be announced when the day approaches."
In response to another question, he said that this speech of the President will be made at the Presidential Palace.
In response to a reporter's remark that the President's regular meeting with the leaders of the parties supporting the Government did not take place yesterday Monday as usual and asked if there was a specific reason for this, Mr. Letibiotis said: "To the best of my knowledge there is no specific reason. The President's meetings with the political forces are both regular and continuous. Particularly in the period of technology, some talks or discussions can be held from afar."
To a journalist's remark that a newspaper in Greece has written that a Cypriot minister has been asked to be removed with the intervention of Mitsotakis and that two political leaders of Greek parties have already asked the Greek Prime Minister for explanations on this issue, and asked what Nicosia's response is, the Spokesman said: "I can assure you that this is not true under any circumstances. The decision on the recent reshuffle was solely the choice of the President of the Republic on the basis of his own assessment. In no way does this allegation stand up."
Asked whether the Republic of Cyprus was aware of the British strikes against the Houthis before they took place, Mr. Letybiotis said: "The Republic of Cyprus is in constant communication with the United Kingdom within the framework set out in the Treaty of Establishment in relation to the use of the British Bases. What we must stress once again is that the Republic of Cyprus has no connection or involvement with the military operations." He added: "It is also relevant, moreover, the communication that the Foreign Minister had with his British counterpart."
