In a climate of deep emotion, the funeral service of the EOKA fighter and former community leader of the community of Lagoudera, Andreas Stylianou, was held today, March 3, 2024, at 2 p.m. at the Holy Monastery of Panagia tou Araka in Lagoudera.
Andreas Stylianou, a fervent patriot, was one of the four companions of the Stavraetos of Machaera, Gregory Afxentios, who were ordered to leave the hideout, where Afxentios fought the battle alone with the armoured and numerous British soldiers.
Andreas Stylianou was born in the village of Nicosia district on 20 October 1930. His parents were Stylianos Nikiforou and Maria Panayiotou. Poor, hardworking and honest people. He attended the primary school of his village and was a very good student. From an early age he learned to love his country and Christ and always sought to become a good man and a good Christian. When he graduated from school at the age of 11, for livelihood reasons, he worked at many private jobs in the summer and in sowing fields. He also worked as an artisan shoemaker in the craft shop of Michael Eleftheriou. As the first-born in his family, he undertook work on many construction projects to help his parents financially. This continued until 1952, when he moved to Nicosia, where he worked to support his four brothers and sisters, who were attending the Pancyprian Gymnasium.
Andreas Stylianou's first contact with the EOKA struggle of 1955-59 was on 25 March 1954, when Archbishop Makarios III delivered the solemn speech on the anniversary of the National War of Independence.

In August 1955, responding to the call of his country, he was sworn in and became a member of EOKA by Michael Eleftheriou at the house of Kyriakos Nikiforos.
Andreas Stylianou lived his life with a strong sense of justice and a deep Christian faith and was loved, admired and appreciated by all those who knew him.
The funeral service was conducted by Metropolitan Neophytos of Morphos. Eulogies were delivered by His Eminence Metropolitan Neophytos of Morphos, Mr. Michael Stylianou on behalf of the family and Mr. Michael Simeou on behalf of the Community Council of Lagos and Mr. Michael Simeou on behalf of the Community Council of Lagos. Among others, His Holiness Metropolitan Neophytos of Morfu, on behalf of the President of the Republic the Commissioner for Mountainous Areas Mr. Charalambos Christofinas and on behalf of the Speaker of the Parliament the Parliamentary Representative of DISY Mr. Nikos Tornaritis. The Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Ioannis Papameletiou, his friends and colleagues Mr. Nikos Kosis and Mr. Charalambos Battarias and a large number of people were present on behalf of the Hellenic Republic. Charalambos Batarias described his death as a great and irreplaceable loss and noted that the deceased spared no effort and personal sacrifices in order to offer everything for the liberation struggle, his country and his compatriots.
The funeral, which coincided with the annual memorial service of Gregory Afxentios, was held at public expense, following the personal intervention of the President of the Republic, Mr. Nikos Christodoulides.
