The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announces that the fire that broke out yesterday, Saturday, 25 May 2024, at 17:55, between the communities of Linos and Flassos was fully controlled by 20:30.
The fire burned an area of about 20 hectares, covered with pine trees, bushes and other low wild vegetation.
To extinguish the fire, 84 people of the Forestry Department with 12 fire engines, three earth movers, two tankers and two agricultural tractors operated. The Forestry Department's firefighting operations were assisted by the Fire Department with 16 personnel and five fire engines and the Game and Wildlife Service with six personnel and three fire engines. Members of the Support CY volunteer team, the Ambulance Service, the Police, other volunteers and local residents also participated in the operation.
In addition, a firefighting aircraft of the Forestry Department, a helicopter of the National Guard, a Jordanian helicopter based in Cyprus and a helicopter of the British Bases participated in the extinguishing operation.
Firefighting forces remained in the area throughout the night to monitor the fire and to deal with possible reignitions.
The exact cause of the fire is under investigation.
