The Forestry Department of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment announces that the fire that broke out yesterday, Monday, 24/06/2024, at 16:55 was fully controlled today, Tuesday, 25/6/2024, at 6:00. The burnt area is estimated at approximately 1.3 square kilometres of forest vegetation.
Strong ground firefighting forces continued to operate throughout the night to extinguish the fire. At sunrise, aerial operations resumed. Strong fire-fighting forces remain in the area to deal with any reignitions.
12 aircraft contributed to the extinguishing operations from the air. Ground forces from the Forestry Department amounted to 150 people, 20 fire engines, 10 earth movers and three tankers.
From the Fire Service 15 persons with five fire engines, from the Civil Defence 31 persons with 11 small fire engines, from the Game and Wildlife Service six persons with two small fire engines, from the Limassol District Administration four persons with two small fire engines. Significant contributions were also made by members of the community councils of the area, the Police, National Guard, AHK and volunteer groups.
The cause of the fire is attributed to the throwing of fireworks.
