Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos attended the informal meeting of the Foreign Affairs Council of the European Union (EU), which took place today in Brussels.
The Foreign Ministers discussed the ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine in the presence of Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, as well as the humanitarian situation in Gaza in the presence of the United Nations Special Coordinator for Humanitarian Assistance and Reconstruction in Gaza, Ms Sigrid Kaag. Under "Other business", Foreign Ministers discussed current developments in Venezuela and Georgia. In the framework of the meeting, the Foreign Ministers also attended an informal working lunch hosted by Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
After the informal working lunch, the Foreign Minister made a statement to the media, stating the following: "A long discussion in the framework of the EU Informal Foreign Affairs Council with the Turkish Foreign Minister as guest has been concluded. The opportunity was given for the European Union, both at institutional level and at Member State level, to express very clearly its positions around the Cyprus problem and how this is an important fundamental factor in making progress on the Euro-Turkish issue. The approach of the other Member States on this issue leaves us completely satisfied. We have had the opportunity to stress that there can be no disconnection between the Cyprus issue and any progress that may be made on the Euro-Turkish issue. Subsequently, as the discussion progressed, issues were raised which are firm positions of the Turkish side. Issues, which were answered with absolute clarity on the basis of international legitimacy."
In the margins of the Council's proceedings, the Foreign Minister met with Ms Kaag, whom he thanked for her close cooperation and coordination in the efforts of the international community to send humanitarian aid to Gaza through all available channels and means, including the Amalthea Plan.
